How many hours to sleep?
In general, adults need approximately 7 to 9 hours. However,
there is a range for a reason. It depends on the individual person. With the
busy lifestyle that many adopt, often sleeping becomes a luxury rather than
something basic. The sleeping patterns will vary from weekdays to weekends.
Your body might not be able to adjust and adapt well.
One way to find out how much of sleep do you need:
1) Set a standard timing where continuously everyday for 2 weeks you will wake up at that time. For example, you set at 9am. Everyday (including weekends) during the 2 weeks period, you wake up on time at 9am.
2) Next, for the 2 weeks, head to bed by the time you feel tired.
3) Continuously do this for a few days to a week, your body will slowly adjust to the wake up timing of 9am (for example).
4) By the 2nd week, you would probably see a clearer pattern of the timing you need to sleep in order to wake up by 9am.
5) Calculate the time difference. That could be the number of hours you need.
At the end of the day, it really depends person by person. Some may go by each day with 5 hours, while some others needs at least 10 hours. You got to find that optimum number in order not to sleep to little nor too much.

DIY Acupressure 4 - 8 Feb 2011
I hope the previous DIY Acupressure articles are useful for you. For this article, it is to highlight to you the fact that our very own hands has acupressure points for the whole body as well. YES, the whole body from top to bottom. The above picture shows the various organs that are connected to our hands.
At your own free time, be it resting from work, watching television or hearing your favourite music, it is no harm to simply massage both of your hands. In doing so, it stimulates and activates these organs and induce reliefs of aches and pains. Particularly useful for me is the sinus points (located at the tips of our fingers), I have sinus problem since young.
Try it out! Feel the difference :)

Sleeping ENOUGH & Sleeping RIGHT - 1 Feb 2011
What are the few activities that are integral to our daily lives? Work, Eat and Sleep. While people will say that we work to earn, we earn to pay for our living. We eat to survive and we work in order to feed ourselves. Sleep is often neglected. We sleep lesser and lesser. We sleep late at nights. Or worse, we think that sleeping less will save us time for work or sleeping is a waste of time!
It is essential that YOU get the right level of sleep your body deserves! Why do I say so? I want you to avoid/ eliminate other health problems that will occur.
It is essential that YOU get the right level of sleep your body deserves! Why do I say so? I want you to avoid/ eliminate other health problems that will occur.
1. Your body needs to regenerate and repair
During the night (when you ought to be sleeping), it is this time when various parts of your body repairs and regenerates itself. After a long day of “work”, your organs like lungs, brain, liver, kidney needs to have its deserved rest. By prolonging or delaying your sleeping time, it will not be able to recover well.
Have you ever noticed, that when you have a cough and continued to stay up till 2am, your cough only seem to worsen? Well, it’s because the recovery process start from approximately 10/11pm to 2/3am.
Simply, getting ENOUGH sleep at the RIGHT TIME is to prevent health problems.

2. Productivity
Though it is a common to hear that we need 7-9 hours of sleep, it actually differs from person to person. When you sleep lesser than what you need (for example, sleeping 5 hours when you need 7 hours), you will feel more restless, lesser energy to cope the next day’s work attention.
With the level of energy, how could you be more efficient and productive? For some people, with insufficient sleep, they may carry them a short temper along with them as well.
Why not have sufficient sleep in order to carry out the day RIGHT!
Stay tune as I will uncover how sleep can lose fats and how to spot the number of sleep hours you need.

Why “Doing Nothing” helps? - 26 Jan 2011
Singapore’s life just gets busier and busier. We see people rushing to work, rushing to school, rushing to meet clients, rushing to catch that bus or mrt train in which another vehicle will come in the next few minutes. Are all these rushing worth it? Some may say, “I need to rush to meet that client! That’s my income generator!”, “I need to catch this mrt train! Or not I will be late for work!”
Yes, I agree that we all need to survive. We got to get our butts up and earn the money we need for our living expenses. However, in the mist of rushing, getting stressed up, have you ever thought of just taking a mere couple of minutes to “DO NOTHING”?! Yes, “DO NOTHING”! That’s what I’m preaching here. And I meant to simply shut down your brain and body activity for that short while simply doing nothing at all.
In one of my previous classes in SMU, an established working professional who has years of experience in Boston Consulting Group came to speak and share about his experience. This is exactly what he told us to do.
At different phrases of your life, it is inevitable that you might reach at a crossroad of your life, or at a point where you simply gets lost in the direction of life. Or, it could be a situation where you love what are doing now, however in the mist of being busy, you simply burnout! This is a point of time where you could actually drag yourself out of the “mess” and find a chance or two to “DO NOTHING”.

A challenge for you: Simply stop whatever you are doing now, and simply DO NOTHING for the next 2 minutes. YES! Just 2 minutes!

I can almost bet that you will find it hard to even sustain past the 1st minute.
To illustrate a simple but true incident: Once, I mentioned this to a friend in SMU. I told him the significance of “Doing Nothing”. His immediate reply was, “No, No, No, How can I not do or think anything at all?! Cannot, cannot…”
A few months later, we brought up the same topic in a different situation. He had his laptop repaired. Without it, he had fewer emails to check or reply. He has less chance to surf internet or do his research or work. He told me, “I had to wait for a few days before my laptop gets repaired. Though I can’t do work, somehow it feels nice to “escape” a while to clear out my mind” – BINGO!
Though the above incident did not fully illustrate the notion of “DOING NOTHING”, it shows the effect of how giving your mind a breather actually helps you pushing forward further and better. That brings up to the issue of Time Management. We often hear people say they have no time for almost everything, but do they really have no time or did they not spend their time efficiently? I will share/discuss more about Time Management in my future posts. Do check it out! In the meantime, challenge yourself to “DO NOTHING” for the next 2 minutes!

DIY Acupressure 3 - 19 Jan 2011
This is something I wish to share with all of you. It was taught to me a few years back by my sinseh. I got injured a couple of times on my ankle and wrist. Playing floorball, it takes a lot of sprinting and sudden change of direction during the game. It can take a huge toll on one's lower body.
This acupressure point will help in blood circulation and help strengthen your legs.
How to locate the point:
- Place four fingers as shown just below your kneecap.
- Locate the point at the depression between the outside of the shin bone and leg muscle.
Using your knuckle or a pen, apply slight pressure till you feel a slight numbness. You can do it for about 30secs to 1min. For sports athletes, you can do this right before your game warm up. It helps.
For those who needs to seek treatment for your muscle injuries and are open to acupuncture treatment, I strongly recommend my sinseh to you. Feel free to contact me for her details :)

DIY Acupressure 2 - 12 Jan 2011
Busy lifestyles have often taken a toll on the issue of sleep. Stress from work, family and society pressure also does not help either. Many of our eyes are often lethargic and are in need of relaxation. The following are a few pointers on what you can do on-the-go when you have a bit time on hand.
Acupressure on your eyes can help relax and improve the function of your eye. For your eyes, it is best recommended to use your own fingers/knuckles to massage the various points in a circular motion as stated below from the picture (I dont think you would want to use a pencil that close to your eyes).
Spend 5-10 seconds per points before moving to the next point. You can do both side at the same time.
Let's start getting beautiful, healthy eyes today!

Acupressure is a combination of "Acupuncture" and "Pressure". Finding different point at our body, it could trigger an improvement, healing or relieving effect.
How to acupressure: Upon finding the right "spot", one could use their thumb, knuckles or a tip of a pen to put a slight pressure following a rotation at the "spot" in a counter-clockwise direction. Do it at intervals of 30 secs to 1-min.
The following are some of the "spots" you can try on your own:
